Energy-efficient Refrigeration Solutions in S-Market in Palokka, Finland

2020-09-10

The Finnish supermarket S-Market in Palokka, owned by S-Group cooperative, has updated its look after the renovation in June. The store is redesigned in accordance with the new S-Market concept and commercial refrigerators are replaced with the innovative FREOR refrigerated display showcases from the Green Wave R290 line, significantly improving the store’s energy efficiency. The climate-friendly project was implemented working together with our partner CoolFors Finland OY. The refrigeration system was remodeled in an operating store, so many shoppers could continue with their daily routines.

More than cooling

S-Group is committed to improving the environmental impact of its business and supports ecologically conscious operations, therefore placed a great emphasis on green cooling solutions in S-Market Palokka store.

The store, taking up a wide 1000 m2 shopping area (in total – 1600 m2), retrofitted from R404A glycol-cooled remote system to a Hydroloop system and replaced all the store’s refrigerated cabinets to self-contained R290-operated units. All 4 cold rooms (4 units) were refurbished with R290 water loop units.

Simple hydraulic piping was connected to an existing pump and two of the dry coolers. The newly installed water loop system was directly connected to an existing heat recovery system. A recovery system helps save on energy bills and keep the store warm during the winter months using excess refrigeration heat.

The system installation process is flexible, thus allowing the shop to perform per usual and not requiring to be closed for the renovation.

One of the benefits of the Hydroloop system is that it has low space requirements – there is no need for a traditional compressor room, which allows you to save the valuable square meters. Natural refrigerant R290, with the GWP of only 3, becomes one of the leading natural refrigerants, replacing HFC according to EU regulation No. 517/2014.

Equipment Installed

In S-Market’s spacious and bright store, a wide selection of fresh products is sold every day. FREOR showcases are there to preserve the best quality of the products:

  • Spacious chiller cabinets JUPITER, 12 open-front units, 15 units equipped with glass doors. All multidecks have Dual air curtains as a standard, which adds up to energy saving.
  • Commercial upright freezers ERIDA, 3 units. This freezer ensures the preservation of frozen produce and offers a wide merchandise display at the customers’ eye level.
  • Display freezers DELTA, 4 units. The freezer has both chest freezer and vertical freezer benefits, which makes it a powerful sales tool for the store.

FREOR has been a commercial refrigeration equipment supplier to Finland since 2015. Looking for green cooling solutions that meet regulations? Do not hesitate to email us: sales@freor.com.
