Grocery Store Energy Saving Opportunities

2019-08-09

Supermarkets are among the most energy-consuming commercial buildings. Refrigeration alone accounts for 30-50 % of the total energy consumption of the store. Also, food retail accounts for 1 to 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

With the EU set climate targets for 2030, many responsible retail organizations are switching to climate-friendly refrigeration. The climate-friendly choice allows supermarkets to achieve environmental goals and to comply with future legislation and regulations. The investments are also made thinking of how to reduce energy consumption.

Cooling installations have quite a long lifespan. The choice made on the refrigeration system today will impact the store’s energy consumption for many years. That’s why store owners need to plan at least 7 years ahead and choose their refrigeration systems wisely.

Cost-effective Refrigeration Solutions Which Pay Off

As a future-proof HFC-free refrigeration technology, FREOR offers Hydroloop refrigeration system together with propane-based refrigerated showcases. The solution has shown great results in energy-savings, and our clients are already happy with the outcome of the investment.

Our customers in the Netherlands report significant energy savings:

  • COOP store in Delft city claims that total energy costs after FREOR waterloop installation have fallen by 20 %.
  • The Hans Meijer Supermarket, located in the same city, reported 33 % overall energy savings.
  • Sjouke Wijnsma, the owner of recently refurbished Alles ûnder ien dak (eng. Everything Under the Roof) store in the Frisian village claims that after the month of FREOR Hydroloop system installation, the general energy consumption at the store has fallen by more than 44 %. The results pleasantly surprised the owner as the energy savings were reached after installing a new oven and grill.

The Hydroloop system installations were performed by FREOR partner Koelservice van Tol, which is the advocate of green energy-efficient refrigeration solutions in the Netherlands. Commercial refrigeration solutions in those stores account for 60-70 % of overall store energy consumption.

Recommendations for smaller store owners

For the store to become more economical, we advise to follow these guidelines when refurbishing the store:

  1. Invest in the glycol-cooled refrigeration system. It does not require the machinery room, giving more space for trading. It helps save energy while avoiding premises overheating in summer. Refrigerated showcases with built-in units guarantee close to zero leakage of refrigerant. It is a sustainable
  2. Use natural R290 refrigerant. Propane is nature-friendly, low GWP, future regulation-compliant refrigerant, whose thermodynamic properties guarantee efficient cooling. In some countries, you can benefit from governmental subsidies or get tax benefits investing in green systems.
  3. Close the cabinets with doors. The doors minimize the energy needed to keep the right temperature inside the cabinets. Double, triple glass, passive doors with no electric heaters help save even more.
  4. Use residual heat. If the store is in a colder climate zone, it is strongly recommended use the residual heat for premises or water heating.
